Biokovo: the jewel of Dalmatia

If you dream of a trip that combines unforgettable views, rich nature and unique tourist experiences, the Biokovo Massif is a place you should have on your list.

Biokovo – a land of nature

Biokovo is a mountain range located in the heart of the Dalmatian coast, stretching 36 km long and 9.5 km wide. It is not only the largest, but also the highest massif in Dalmatia, being at the same time one of the two parts of the Dinaric Mountains that reach all the way to the sea. It is a place of extraordinary natural diversity, where vegetation, animals and underground fauna create a fascinating ecosystem.

Richness of flora and fauna

Biokovo’s vegetation is extremely diverse, comprising approximately 1,500 species, including many endemics and relicts. Here, steppe and forest forms meet, dominated by Mediterranean plants, and from the land side you can see beech and fir forests, strips of white and black hornbeam, black pine, as well as vineyards and olive groves.

The animal world of Biokovo is equally diverse, offering the observation of butterflies, owls, salamanders, frogs, vipers, hedgehogs, weasels, martens, mouflons, wild pigs and many other fascinating creatures. The underground fauna, with over 120 organisms living in the caves, gives this place an additional mysterious charm.

Nature protection: Biokovo Nature Park

In 1981, the Biokovo area, with an area of 19,550 ha, was protected as a Nature Park. This is a unique place due to its geomorphological forms, richness of plant and animal species, as well as captivating natural beauty. Entry to the park is allowed from dawn to dusk, which makes any moment of the day a perfect time to explore this natural enclave.

Hiking trails

Biokovo offers many hiking trails, allowing visitors to discover the most beautiful corners of this massif.
Popular routes are Makarska – Makar – Vošac – Sveti Jure (5 hours and 30 minutes) and Makarska – Tučepi – Staza – Sveti Jure (asphalt road 31 km).
The routes are relatively easy and well marked, and during the hike you can rest in shelters such as Planinarski dom pod Vošcem or Planinarska kuća pod Svetim Jurom.

Admire the remains of former shepherd’s houses, and from the viewpoints enjoy amazing panoramas of Split, Omiš, Imotski, Vrgorac, the Neretva River, the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Vis, Mljet, the Pelješac peninsula and, with very good visibility, the Italian peak of Monte Calvo, in the distance by 252 km.

Biokovo is not only about mountains; it is a land of adventure, countless views and undisturbed harmony with nature.
