Olib – a small island in the Adriatic Sea

Olib, also known as Ulbo in the Italian dialect or Lüb in German, is one of the pearls of the Zadar Archipelago, tempting with its beauty and rich history. Located north of Zadar, southwest of Pag, southeast of Lošinj and east of Silba, Olib is a true oasis of peace in the heart of the Adriatic Sea.

This charming island with an area of 26.14 km² and a coastline of 33.34 km is a place with a fascinating history, inhabited since Roman times. The first mention of it comes from the 10th century, when it was mentioned in documents under the name Aloep. Since then, Olib has been a testament to its extraordinary past, and its landscapes and culture attract travelers from all over the world.

The highest hill on the island is Kalac, reaching a height of 74 m above sea level. Its summit offers a picturesque view of the area, encompassing the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea and the charming coves that surround Olib. It is an ideal place for nature and hiking lovers.

It is worth noting that čakavica, a dialect of Croatian, is still spoken on Olib. This is an element that adds authenticity to the island and emphasizes its uniqueness in the linguistic context. Another interesting fact is that there are no freshwater sources on Olib, which means that every house on the island is equipped with its own rainwater cistern. This is an example of a sustainable approach to the economy in conditions of limited freshwater resources.

Olib is not only a place for history and nature lovers, but also for those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The narrow, charming streets of the town, local taverns serving tasty seafood dishes, and a friendly atmosphere make Olib a place where time passes more slowly.

For enthusiasts of active recreation, there are numerous tourist trails leading through picturesque landscapes and hidden corners of the island. Olib is also a perfect place for kayaking, diving or visiting local cultural monuments.

Olib is not just another island on the map of the Adriatic, it is a place of unique character, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. For travelers looking for peace, natural beauty and authenticity, Olib becomes a dream place to explore.a
