The peak of Sveti Nikola (626 m) towers over the island, and Mediterranean vegetation, including distinctive lavender, gives the island its unique aroma. Lavender cultivation is one of the island’s main sources of income, and its fragrance lingers in the air, creating a unique atmosphere.

Culture and Traditions

Hvar is not only picturesque landscapes, it is also rich in culture and traditions. Residents make their living by fishing and growing grape vines, olives, figs, lavender and rosemary. Tourism, which has been growing here for more than 140 years, is an important part of the economy.

UNESCO Heritage and the Lace of Hvar

In 2008, the cultural landscape of the island of Hvar was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Old Grad Plain. This recognition confirms the uniqueness and value of this part of Croatia.

Hvar is also famous for its unique craftsmanship – tenerife lace made from threads made from agave fibers. The nuns of the local Benedictine monastery are the sole creators of these intricate works of art. Lace-making is not only a craft, but also a heritage, which has been listed as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage Site in Europe.
